No more Maher
Starting the show with "F the Pope" was really jolting, even to me, a non-believer. On TV, he's "charmingly" offensive, but in person he was simply vulgar. He did not speak into the microphone well (he had to hold it in his hand) so that much of the time we older people couldn't clearly hear his words over the laughter around us. Yes, we laughed, but on the whole, it was tiresome to hear him mocking his usual topics. As a long time watcher of Hail The Sun on TV, much of the show was the same stuff, some of the jokes re-cycled. For all we could tell, he was stoned...at one point he went off topic, starting with mentioning Bill Cosby and Michael Jackson, intending to go on to comment on Cosby, but he went off on a very un-funny and overly long digression about Michael Jackson, little boys and how being molested by Cosby would have been preferable to a beating that Maher got as a young boy...all of this accompanied by hand gestures leaving no doubt what he was talking about. The show ended abruptly, with a 'goodnight' that didn't even wait for the laughs or applause to end. Lights up, show over. He needs new material.
